C’mon, Everybody…Let’s “Groupon” This Week!

Have you noticed that the web and its social media sites have spawned a whole new lexicon?   For example, just as we “tweet” and “blog,” friends are all of a sudden telling each other, “Facebook me!”

This week, here at The Community Foundation we’re adding a new word to that list – we’re “Groupon-ing.”

Beginning today through Saturday, April 30, we all have the special opportunity to give to The Foundation’s Neighbors in Need Fund through Groupon and its “Deal of the Day” program.  When you give through Groupon, The Community Foundation will match your donation dollar-for-dollar.

Not only that, but you’ll feel good about the fact that 100% of your gift will support food banks, homeless shelters, medical clinics, and other safety net services in DC, Northern Virginia, and Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties in Maryland – all serving the thousands of Washington-area men, women, children and families who so desperately need our help.

When it comes to our region’s economic disparities, the picture isn’t pretty.  In fact, while experts tell us that the recession is over, the real truth is this:  it depends on who you ask.

Whereas our region’s middle class and affluent communities are rebounding, the District of Columbia’s Ward 8 has the highest unemployment rate – 35% — in the entire United States.  And, 1 in 4 District of Columbia children lives in hunger.  Meanwhile, Prince George’s County has the highest rate of foreclosures in the state of Maryland.  In Northern Virginia, formerly well-to-do communities such as Prince William County are seeing unprecedented numbers of families needing emergency food and utility shutoff-prevention assistance.

To date, The Neighbors in Need Fund has awarded $4.2 million, supporting more than 110 greater Washington-area safety net nonprofits. Established in the fall of 2008 as a response to the economic crisis, The Fund has raised $5 million from area corporations, foundations, individuals and families.

So, “Groupon” with us this week and support your neighbors in need!  It’s easy:  just visit and make your gift today.  What’s more, put your social network into action and spread the word – for example, tweet about it on Twitter and “Facebook” your friends.
Together, we can make a real impact – putting food on a kitchen table, providing a warm bed to sleep in at night, and helping a family avoid eviction.

That’s just about the best “Deal of the Day” that I can think of.
