Raising up one of Montgomery County’s Unsung Heroes

October 23, 2013

By C. Marie Henderson, Director, The Community Foundation for Montgomery County

At our annual Celebration of Giving event this Monday, October 28th, The Community Foundation for Montgomery County will salute our 2013 Montgomery County Philanthropist of the Year: Solomon “Sol” Graham, Jr.

Graham is the Founder and Chairman of the Board of Quality Biological, Inc. While building his business and raising his children with his wife Dorothy, Graham invested the same unwavering dedication that fostered his success into giving back to the community.  He especially sought opportunities to couple his giving with volunteerism, by serving in leadership roles for the organizations he cared about most.  The impact of his generosity is seen throughout numerous organizations, which strive to make Montgomery County a strong, thriving, community for all. These organizations include Easter Seals, George B. Thomas Learning Academy, Strathmore, Montgomery General Hospital, the Macklin Business Institute of Montgomery College, and the Montgomery College Foundation.

Graham is especially ardent about increasing access to higher education for our County’s economically-challenged youth.  He and Dorothy established two scholarships at Montgomery College: the Quality Biotechnology Scholarship Fund to assist students interested in studying science and technology and the Solomon and Dorothy Graham Endowed Scholarship for students enrolled in the Macklin Business Institute.  He frequently inspires friends to give by recounting his own story of growing up with modest means, achieving success thanks to educational opportunities, and finding deep personal satisfaction in giving back.  Under his leadership as Montgomery College Foundation Scholarship committee chair, the college’s scholarship program doubled in donations from area businesses, foundations, organizations, and individuals

Graham is an exceptional model of how to use one’s passion and talent to make a lasting impact in the community, and we are proud to salute him as this year’s honoree.
